The rates are “disproportionately female, black, Hispanic, or between the ages of 18 and 25” (Poverty). The poverty rate in the United States “is 13.5 percent” (What is Current Poverty Rate). It is true that poverty affects some more than others, but poverty plays a key role in shaping a person’s life. When a person is in poverty they usually get bad health and bad education. Poverty lowers a person’s opportunity to succeed, but escaping poverty is possible with hard work and resilience.
Some might argue that there is no class system in America. Some believe this due to the apparent equal opportunities that are offered in America. Everyone is chasing that “American dream” that you can succeed and be whoever you want to be in America. That just simply is not true. Though most of us are equal at birth, we all have environmental factors that either hold us back or push us ahead. In a capitalist nation, it is good to be different and unequal.
