As a result of the Columbine school shooting, people rushed to the conclusion that gun legislation was the answer to end mass shootings. People proposed many restrictions on guns that most likely would not have been enough and effective. Gun legislation would not entirely prevent a mass shooting occurring let alone prevent someone from obtaining a weapon. School shootings are more frequent because there are too many guns and not enough gun control (Kleck, 2009, P. 1448). The weapons the Columbine shooters used varied from source to source.The Columbine shooting is not the worst mass murder committed in schools, although that is what some believe. In fact, the Columbine school shooting did not have the highest death toll. The mass murders …show more content…
Gun legislation should not implemented because it would not be effective. Kleck discussed that guns were not the main weapons used in mass shootings. Kleck used a school shooting that happened in 1927 in Michigan that involved explosives instead of guns to support his claim. The death toll in the Michigan school shooting was higher than the Columbine shooting death toll. When referring to the Columbine shooting,The New York Times said the real motive of the shooters and where the shooters acquired their weapons were not yet known.. Kleck inserted a table showing different school shootings that occurred, who committed them, the site, and the date to explain the different gun-related patterns that were noted in several incidents. The guns used in the Columbine shooting were just ordinary guns. Kleck named the news station and its opinion on the type of weapons used. Kleck said many gun users believe that most criminals acquire their guns from gun traffickers instead of gun shows. Criminals pay amounts right at or way below the retail price at gun shows. (Kleck, 2009, P. 1453) Liberals are fast to say that gun legislation would have easily prevented a mass shooting from happening.
