Edema is the abnormal accumulation of watery fluid in the tissues of the body. The fluid accumulation may be under the person’s skin, usually in areas, such as the legs, ankles, hands, or the feet. This will result in swelling because there is an excess of fluid in the skin within the tissues.

What are the Common Causes of Leg Edema?
The causes of leg edema comprise when the small blood vessels leak fluid into the nearby tissues. As a result, the tissues will begin to swell. It may because there is too much pressure or force inside the tiny blood vessels, there is a force outside the vessels that causes the liquid to be drawn, or that the blood vessels’ wall cannot maintain the equilibrium that leads to loss of fluid.

This causes the tightening of the surrounding skin. This kind of swelling is dependent on gravity so it may decrease or increase as the body position changes. For instance, if the person is supine or lying face upward, the swelling appears in the sacrum, not in the legs.

Most often, there are no symptoms of fluid retention in case of pulmonary edema. There is no noticeable swelling in the extremities, however, the signs include shortness of breath, waking up feeling breathless, and requiring double or multiple pillows at night to feel comfortable sleeping.
