Even today, William Shakespeare is still considered one of the greatest writers of mankind, if not greatest. He wrote many famous plays, including one being the well-known Romeo and Juliet. It is believed that he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23, 1564. His family consisted of his mother, Mary Arden, father, John Shakespeare, and seven siblings. Not much information is known about his childhood, but it is assumed that he attended King Edward VI School, a grammar school located in his hometown. At the age of eighteen, he married a 26-year-old woman named Anne Hathaway. They had a daughter named Susanna and a pair of twins named Hamnet and Judith. Perhaps the reason for that is that I have not yet come to the level of maturity needed to interpret his way with the English language. Doing further research on his background has helped me understand him as a person better, which might possibly also help me understand his works better as well. I never really realized how much he has contributed to the English language. I hear about all these famous Shakespearean quotes and insults, but I never realized how many of the words we use on a daily basis were born from his brilliant mind. When I saw that list, it honestly just blew my mind. How can one man possibly be so intelligent and imaginative? It makes me feel a little disappointed when I see my own generation. We have gotten so lazy with all this new technology that we cannot even use correct grammar or spell out a word without using abbreviations on social media. Even the greatest novels written nowadays are nothing like the beautifully written works of literature from Shakespeare’s time. This issue has always been in the back of my mind, but seeing all the accomplishments that Shakespeare has achieved in his 52 years of life has once again reminded me of humanity’s path downhill.
