“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success” (Ford, 2016). Have you ever wondered how do people behave or react when they are placed in a group? Groups are defined as two or more people working, iterating and depending with each other to accomplish tasks or succeed common goals (Schermerhorn, 2011). In today’s world, employees cannot tolerate spending as much time in the workplace nor less working together in groups. In a group, poor collaboration occurs because of conflict management, underprivileged recognition, and by not establishing norms; where members do not feel committed. Also, because they cannot acknowledge what are their roles, which is “a set of expectation associated with the job …show more content…
In the video, Joe has four major tasks, which are an asset the current hardware for the six offices, check the market option, examine the learning curve and evaluate the workload implementing the software. There are two major types of conflict which are substantive and emotional conflicts (Schermerhorn, 2011). “Substantive conflict a fundamental disagreement over ends or goals to be pursued and the means for their accomplishment” (Schermerhorn, 2011, p.207). For instance, Joe tells Cheng “not to worry about the time frame, but to choose something that he might even end up liking” (Grand Canyon University, 2016). Joe’s interest is to serve the organization's needs but also help the group members be motivated about the project. In addition, emotional conflicts drain the energies of people by causing distraction and generating a negative atmosphere (Schermerhorn, 2011). For instance, Rosa’s conflict is that meeting is taking too long and that she has other priorities like making phone calls. If Rosa wouldn’t have interrupted the meeting, then it would run within the time frame planned. Moreover, conflict management is facilitated by assigning people to work together which is prone to conflict (Schermerhorn, 2011). The conflict is that Rosa, Cheng and Simon instead of using …show more content…
The motivation is applied in the management theory to describe the level, direction, and persistence of how individual works (Schermerhorn, 2011, p. 87). The major motivational problem is that they do not motivate nor trust each other. It is very important that they apply the two-factor theory by Frederick Herzberg’s; which offers an agenda for understanding motivation in the workplace (Schermerhorn, 2011). For instance, if Rosa applied the two-factor theory with the group it would give them that confidence to believe in one another. Being motivated is an opportunity to show that they are capable of achieving any task and personal growth. Also, applying the equity theory of motivation is known best through the work of J.Stacy Adams, which would end discomfort and restore equality to the situation (Schermerhorn, 2011, p 90). In the video, Cheng kept bragging about his new job position which made Rosa and Simon were uncomfortable because they feel he is getting special treatments. If Rosa felt that she was getting treated like Cheng than her performance would improve. If they make her feel that she is essentially important, then she would find ways to improve her performance. In addition, applying reinforcement theory is “explaining “why” people do things in terms of satisfying needs, resolving felt inequities, and/or pursuing positive expectancies and task goals”
