In Philadelphia, 100% of students are forced to wear school uniforms. One in five schools in the United States enforce a mandatory uniform policy (Procon.org). In these schools, students do not have the option of what to wear. Everyone wears a regulated and approved uniform. Students should not be required to wear school uniforms because it limits their creativity, encourages conformity, and ultimately, increases bullying. encourages conformity, and ultimately, increases bullying. In Prince George, Maryland, the school requires school uniforms. Many of the students wanted to wear pink in October to show their support for breast cancer. You might as well put up a banner in the school hallway that reads “CONFORM”. George Carlin, a student who is forced to wear a uniform to school, said, “Sitting in a blouse and skirt all day made me feel insanely anxious. I wasn’t taken seriously. This is atrocious and damaging to a young person’s mental health; that uniform nearly destroyed me” (Procon.org). George is transgendered. He was born as a female, but he desires to be male and feels that is who he is. His school experience was traumatizing because the boys and girls wear different uniforms. He was forced to wear a skirt every day. The school uniform policy made him feel uncomfortable with who he is. The school was deterring him from being himself. These things deter students for being who they really are. If students are taught only to conform from such a young age then, when it is time for them to join the real world and go into the workforce they will have no idea who they truly are (Issues&controversies.com).
