The influence of conquest in China’s history
Chinese history is more than four thousand years. From time to time, China had different regimes. Throughout the long history, many dynasty houses were founded by a series of non-Chinese “conquest dynasties” people, mostly nomads. Some of these invaders were essentially sinicized after conquest, boosting significantly to the growth of economic, the impacts on culture, and the regulation of the social order in politics. Take Mongol as an exmaple, in 1239 locusts destroyed vegetation so people were starving. Menggu reported this and issued five thousand piculs of army rations to save the starving. During the four years from 1240 to 1243, the great southern campaigns took place. Wherever the armies passed, the local officials complained. Menggu, through loyal and diligent preparations, was able to supply the troops without hurting the people. Whenever there was a revolt, Menggu defeat it. Whenever circuits condemned prisoners to death, Menggu often times would redress grievances and reduce penalties. By doing these, Menggu government became more acceptable by common people of China. Mongol did not only try to raise people’s well-being, but also consolidated its power through various ways. After Mongol conquered China, the Mongol governors could not replace all the local administrations with their own people, but when they retained subjects of the former states they had to supervise them closely. (p192) In addition to that, “At the court, one minister supervised all the officials and helped the emperor rule.” “Still one Mongol, called the governor, was selected to supervise them. The prefects and magistrates all had to obey his orders” (p192) With supports of common people and powerful ruling method, Mongol gained its governing power and thus was able to endure on the Chinese soil for such a long time. The experience of Mongol may be learned by other countries in Asia in order to rule a country
