There have been several such ways in China's long history, including Confucianism and Buddhism. In about the 5th century BC, under the influence of ideas credited to a man named Lao, Taoism became "the way". Like Confucianism, it has influenced every area of Chinese culture.
Taoism began as a complex system of philosophical thought that could be indulged in by only a few individuals. In later eras it emerged, maybe under the influence of Buddhism, as a communal religion. It later evolved as a popular folk religion.
Common Chinese religious practices
Ancestor Worship
Ancestor worship is a practice that is based on the belief that deceased family members have a continued existence, take an interest in the affairs of the world, and possess the ability to influence the fortune of the living.
