For example, yellow Hanfu’s were strictly reserved for the emperor. Common people had plain, boring colors and had few decorations. In addition, the Zhou dynasty added a couple of modifications as well. The sleeves on the Hanfu became looser and wider. The higher rank the rank the more flamboyant and baroque the attire. Sashes could also be adorned with jade ornaments.
Yuan Dynasty (1271 AD-1368 AD) Later in the Yuan Dynasty the Mongols brought cotton to China. Mongol invasions destroyed many mulberry trees that were necessary to producing silk so the Mongols turned to cotton to fill the gap. They demanded that special training centers built to teach farmers how to produce cotton. In 1296 AD farmers who grew cotton could pay lower taxes and soon enough everyone liked cotton better.
Song Dynasty (1100 AD) During the Song dynasty the emperor’s court for women to bind their feet. They would do this by applying tight bandages around little girl’s feet. Usually their feet should be around three inches long so it can fit in the specially designed shoe for women with bound feet. In many cases, the bandages were so tight that it would break the girl’s toes and bend them. Moreover, the girls struggled to walk and they cried because of the pain.
