Increased technology and improvements in healthcare have increased the lifespan of the average person. My opinions on end of life care very, from patient to patient. I do not believe it is my responsibility to determine what type of end of life care is best for patients. It is my responsibility to help them or their families make those decisions. In my opinion it is important for the physician to inform the patient, and the family if that is their wish, of the seriousness of the dying patient’s condition. It is also my responsibility to inform the patient about any care that is available to them and help them by providing knowledge and my past experiences in such matters available to them and their families, helping them make a decision for themselves.
My job as a job as a nurse is to a dying patient requires me to be truthful of the patient’s condition and provide emotional support. Another role of the nurse is to ensure the remaining time a patient has left is meaningful to the patient and family. To use appropriate treatment and comfort measures, ensuring the patient and the family is as comfortable as possible for as long as the patient is alive.
