Cultural competency allows patients of all races, nationalities and ethnicities to receive individual, effective health care with self-respect. Cultural competency enables a health care provider to perform their job successfully and provide an accurate assessment and treatment for the patient. In turn, a patient is more trusting of their diagnoses and treatment, and more confident that they can accomplish their health goals. A health care provider might feel more gratified and a patient will feel more valued if proper care is provided and cultural values are considered in the treatment process. Both parties should leave the consultation feeling rewarded and that a goal has been accomplished.
