When working with diverse populations in health care, it is vital for professionals to understand cultural competency. Cultural competency is, according to Brannon (2009), “the ability to understand and respond effectively to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients or clients” (p. 2). That also includes, “the acceptance and tolerance of different backgrounds and their associated traits, beliefs…and absence of prejudice against unfamiliar cultures” (p. 2).
