The Dalai Lama once said,
“Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival.” ("Quotes," par. 10)
The Dalai Lama is trying to tell us that you do not need to be religious in order to be compassionate. It is something that everybody is able to do, it just depends on whether they want to do so. The Dalia Lama has become the face of being kind and compassionate for everybody. Even though he is the head the Tibetan Buddhism he shows us that whether you are religious or not you can always be kind. Learning about how the Dalai Lama came to be and the struggles he faced were interesting and through it all he was compassionate.
The Dalai Lama was born as Lhamo Thondup on July 6, 1935 in Takster, Tibet to peasant parents. He was born the fifth of sixteen children to a Tibetan farming family. Mao Zedong had led the now communist China. In 1950 thousands of Chinese Military had invaded Tibet. It has been said that the Chinese were invited to Tibet to save them from a cruel government. The Chinese had also stated that Tibet was originally part of China. None of this was true. The Dalai Lama had visited with China to get them to leave but they would not do so. He had then visited surrounding countries to get their help to force China out of Tibet. None of them offered any support. Seeing his people suffer under the rule of China, the Dalai Lama fled from Tibet to India in 1959 and has not gone back. Since his exile he has worked very hard on helping the Tibetans that have been able to flee their country. He has been working on trying to get Tibet to be returned to their people.
