Dance Critique of a Live Performance When I first entered the theatre I could feel the excitement buzzing in the air, and could sense the really positive energy of the environment. The show that the Sunny Hills Dance Production Company produced was called “Schoolin’ Life,” and the entire first acts were about topics relating to school including: the first day of school, studying, detention, bullying, prom, graduation, etc. I attended it on April 16th, 2016 in the Performing Arts Center. I chose to see this production because my sister was performing in the Dance 3 class. I rarely get the chance to watch her, so I was looking forward to seeing how much she has grown since the last time I saw her dance. The three dances that stood out the most to me were “We Are All Victims,” “Lunchin,’” and “The New Girl.” “We Are All Victims” definitely stood out due to a combination of the song choice and the powerful choreography. The song, “Troll” by Shane Koyczan, added so much depth to the performance, with it not being a typical song choice. Despite just being a freshman, the idea of graduating and seeing the emotion behind the dance allowed me to feel a connection. I have only graduated from my junior high, and that in itself was a huge milestone for me; I cannot even begin to imagine how I am going to feel when my class of 2019 finally graduates. The dance just got me thinking about what lies ahead for me, finishing high school, graduating, going to college, and that’s why it made such an impact. It’s important for the audience to connect to what’s being done on stage because without that connection, the dances are just a showcase of technique and ability.
