For young people ages 15 to 24 years, sports are the second leading cause of traumatic brain injury behind only motor vehicle crashes. Even though there are ways to prevent the damage caused by concussions, participation will decline in sports with a high risk for them, because CTE created by concussions cause academic skills to decline, people who have played football discourage kids on playing the sport, and CTE also causes severe mental and physical complications.
Concussions cause terrible slips in attention spans and concentration, which when you’re experiencing learning and engaging in academic activities that require concentration it can actually cause a student's concussion symptoms to reappear or worsen. The Los Angeles Times stated in an article written in May of 2015 that “New research published by a medical journal called Pediatrics shows that nearly 9 in 10 teens who experience concussions have academic issues afterward.” It also stated that “In this group, 38 percent of students said that headaches, fatigue and trouble concentrating had made school more difficult for them. Forty-four percent said that the concussion symptoms hurt their note-taking skills and homework completion.”
