Textual Condition
The book of Judges continues the story of the nation of Israel as they take possession of the promise land. Judges holds the book of Joshua in the background. The events that conspired in the book of Joshua see their ramifications in the book of Judges. Dating for Judges is unclear information found within the text suggest that composition took place much later after the events. Most scholars debating between an early date of 1400BC to a later date of 1200BC. The date of the Exodus plays a big roll in determine a date for both Judges and Joshua. The nation was trying to settle into the land promise to them. They were to take root in the land, and carry out the law presented to them by Moses from God. Canaanites were still in the land this pose a big problem because the Canaanites participated in idolatry and immorality. Such practices were common for the Canaanite culture. The Israelite were a chosen people set aside for Gods glory and commanded not to participate in such practices. These two cultures found themselves dwelling in the same land together. Within the text chosen for this paper Samson is captured and in prison by the Philistines. The Philistines are a pagan group who worship a pagan God name
