The most notorious leader to come to mind, who worked towards organizing for reform, is Martin Luther King Jr. For decades, people fought for equal civil rights to be extended to African Americans before the reform made considerable headway in the late 1950's and early 60's. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, King advised those in favor of the Civil Rights Movement to protest peacefully. With strong oratory abilities and an unorthodox approach to active protest, King began to generate large strides for the crusade against racial inequality.
