For my summer reading assignment, I selected to read the Death Cure because I had previously read the first two books of the Maze Runner series by James Dasher. Each book contains the adventures of the various trials faced by Thomas and some of the other “Gladers,” whom are immune to the Flare, a disease which keeps adapting and eventually makes the individual go insane. The people of Wicked repeatedly capture Thomas and his friends and are attempting to make a cure. Unfortunately Wicked members intended to perform brain surgery on Thomas and his friends to allegedly return their memories, however the group does not have confidence in the people from Wicked. Moreover, I enjoyed reading about how the characters, like Newt, Thomas, Jorge, Theresa, and Minho, whom were more like family members, even though they are only friends, since they had no memories of their family and in the previous trials these friends depended on each other to survive throughout the various obstacles they encountered, creating connections to the point that they were willing to sacrifice their life for each …show more content…
Ironically, Newt, Thomas, and Minho were more than friends because of their experiences and dependence on each other for survival. During one escape attempt, a grenade that struck Thomas electrocuting him resulted in Minho, Newt, and Brenda pulling him onto the “Berg,” which is a combination of a plane and helicopter, despite being fired upon, to save his life. When Newt was captured, because he had the Flare, he wrote a note to his friends, “Thanks for being my friends” (166) as well as explained that he was relocated to Crank Palace, a place that housed people infected by the Flare. Together, the friends maneuvered their way through all of the infected individuals to locate their comrade, however Newt orders them to leave because he doesn’t want them to observe him metamorphosis any further into a Crank. “I
