Courage is doing the right thing when you know there is a hard consequence. Courage is taking the challenge to help, or even save, another person. Courage is standing up for someone. Courage is one of the most important virtues to practice. Many well-known role models have exhibited courage in their lives, such as Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. St. Francis was very courageous. He gave up a life of luxury to be with God. When St. Francis was captured in a battle between Assisi and Perugia, he was held a prisoner for a year as ransom. After he was let out of prison, he helped the poor and sick in his town. At 42 years old, he got the stigmata, the wounds of Christ in his hands, feet, and side, and was terribly sick and half-blind until his death at 44. He chose to live a life of preaching the good news to all people but prayed in solitude with God when he found the chance. Each person sacrificed something for the good of others and to be one with God. I think that sacrifice is vital to courage, especially in everyday life. One person in my life who shows great courage is my school’s priest, Fr. Larry Covington. He prepares incredible homilies that light me up spiritually and presents them in front of a large congregation. I admire his confidence and courage. He also sacrificed the opportunity to get married to pursue his vocation of being a priest and living a life of prayer with God. Another person I know who shows courage is my friend Connor.
