2. After looking at demographic characteristics of students with disabilities, we spent much of our time focusing on students with disabilities as people and talking about person first language. Describe your perceptions of children and youth with disabilities. Have your opinions changed over the course of the semester? Have your expectations changed?

I have never felt discomfort around children and youth with disabilities and my perception has always been that they are the same as you and I, we are all people and we deserve respect. Children and youth with disabilities face challenges every day and I believe we do not need to have negative attitudes towards these individuals.

I expect school systems, teachers, and families to be knowledgeable in the laws and rights that individuals with disabilities are entitled to. I believe, now, if a person is in the position to work with individuals with disabilities they need to be equipped with education, tools, and understanding of disabilities.

5. During our class on intellectual disabilities, I emphasized the importance of generalization and provided an example of a generalization problem. I said we might teach a student to navigate and use the bus system with his teacher in the classroom, however, when the student is put in the actual situation and has to ride and navigate the bus, the student cannot remember how to do this or follow the steps necessary to complete this task.

For this question, explain generalization and the challenges of generalization faced by students with intellectual disabilities. Give an example of a generalization problem a student might have (not found in your textbook) that illustrates why teaching in a typical community is important. Finally, describe why it is important for students with intellectual disabilities to be able to generalization things and information that they have learned.
