Another difficulty they conquered was the birth of Sacagawea's baby, which Lewis assisted in. Sacagawea showed them many plants that they could consume. When the boat turned over she saved the most important items. This was just the beginning of their challenges on the river. They later go on to be chased by a bear. To continue their expedition they would have to carry everything important to them on their backs about 17 miles to make it around the falls. While doing this, many of the members fell asleep when they fell down or they had extremely sore feet. Since they had to take a detour around the falls this cost them almost an entire month. During their time in the mountains, they were running low on food. After they got over the mountains using the horses given by Sacagawea's brother, the Nez Perce supplied them with enough food to last them two weeks. Not long after their meeting with the Nez Perce, they were headed downstream toward their destination. Even though they had many challenges and difficulties, they still had their victories as well. They made it through a very difficult journey and only lost one member. They made it through the winter and there were times they did not have food or any energy
