An excerpt from Uncle Tom’s Cabin reads, “His fine figure, alert limbs, and bright face, raised an instant competition, and half a dozen bids simultaneously met the ear of the auctioneer”(Miller 69). Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written after the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. It clarified how many Northerners felt about slavery and persuaded them to help escape. It changed the views of some, but many Southerners were enraged at the support this book was receiving. This book persuaded people to take in runaway slaves.
