The federal government required drug testing from government contractors in the 1980s. Now many companies have adopted those policies regarding drug testing in the work place. “Drug testing is legal and – in fact – is the norm in American workplaces today for job applicants, and for employees at most major companies and/or for employees in safety-sensitive positions” (The Institute for a Drug-free workplace, n.d.). Companies today feel that they need to do drug testing in order to promote a safe and efficient work environment, but others believe it is, in fact, an invasion of privacy. A business should know who is involved in producing their products and services and if they have completed their work effectively or have effects from their drugs prohibiting or limiting their work ethic and completion. No company wants to sell a potential broken or any product or service that does not meet their requirements and what the people want from them. Without happy and satisfied customers there will be no profits, so making sure the people who are making the products or services are fully there and are putting their full effort into their job. Knowing this allows a company to run a safe and effective business. Even though it may seem personal to some people and this topic probably should remain personal, the effects could carry into the work place and cause a lot of damage or harm from their personal decisions made at home. Since drugs do have different side effects and they last for certain periods of time a company should be able to know because then it is not personal if they are bringing it into the work place. If so, then companies have the right to complete drug tests and it should not be questionable if a company had any concerns or worries. I always say that it is better to be safe than sorry. By finding out which employees actually do drugs will help the company and other employees, because for the majority of the workers that are not abusing drugs they do not want to work with these people when they are under the influence or could potentially cause harm to anyone or anything. It can be scary and this testing is for a concern not to catch people abusing drugs. Companies are worried about their employees, as well as customers, and by having this drug testing they are able to make sure both are safe and satisfied. Most companies today actually have these policies in order to help these people and get them the help that they may need. Drug testing employees is super beneficial for everyone, even if all employees are tested clean. The other main focus with having this testing is that it helps with having stabilized productivity. Without productivity, a company will be in danger and could face some dangerous and risky threats due to production being hindered. If employees come in high or are still affected by the drugs this could cause their perception and skills to be slowed or even taken away, which causes production to slow down and puts the company behind, losing sales.
