People suffering from a substance abuse disorder are more likely to also be suffering from a mental health disorder as well and not even realize it. Substance abuse and mental health issues are closely related and studies have shown that about seventy percent of people who have one also have some form of the other. This is known as a dual diagnosis. Substance abuse has not always been as bad as it is today, but today we are creating successful treatment programs to help people through their abuse disorder. There are not very many programs available for everyone as of now but they are a work in progress nationwide. With an addiction being considered a disease that is how it should also be treated. The treatment processes are tailored to the specific substance that someone may be dealing with at that particular time, this gives a higher success rate in the ability to stop using the substance. Being able to find a location for treatment and to actually get into the treatment program has been proven difficult. Sometimes you will hear that someone did not receive all the treatment they felt they needed, which actually happens more often than you would think. This is thought to be because they may have something else they may not realize they have going on, such as a mental health disorder. Mental health disorders do not have a set in stone treatment program. This is more because everyone is different and what may work for one person may not work for another. It has been found that a combination of therapy and medication has been the most effective with recovery. Medication can not straight cure mental illness, but can help with the control of symptoms.
