The Moon is essential to life on Earth, which is why it’s important to explore and understand more about it. The Earth’s Moon is the fifth largest in the solar system. Without the Moon, there would be no tides and an unstable climate. Scientists believe a long time ago an object the size of Mars smashed into Earth sending molten materials into orbit around it. The first documented discovery of the moon was in the 1600’s. Following that period, many people wondered why the moon was there and what it did. To answer those questions and gain a deeper understanding, scientists conducted missions to learn more about it. On July 20,1969, Apollo 11 successfully transported a man to the moon making them the first astronauts to complete the trip. Because of the vast 384,400km distance it was a tremendous scientific achievement. In addition, it was a beneficial trip that partially demonstrated some of the impact the Moon has on the Earth. …show more content…
Over many years, the molten material slowly hardened resulting in the lunar planet. It has many similarities with Earth, including a crust, core, and mantle. The Moon also has an atmosphere which is called the exosphere. Unlike that of the Earth’s atmosphere, the moon’s exosphere is a weak and unstable barrier. Therefore the moon is vulnerable to asteroids, and other space junk. It’s gravity is ⅙ of what it is on Earth, which means you would be able to float if you were not weighted down. When the Moon is in direct contact with the sun, the temperature on its surface heats up to 127 degrees Celsius. For the moon surface not facing earth, temperatures can drop to -173 degrees
