Elderly who live in nursing homes typically do not receive the treatment we expect and pay for as family members. I have previously worked in nursing homes in Birmingham, Alabama all the way up to Huntsville and have begun to notice a trend. After speaking to the state, ombudsman, health departments, and even the director’s of nursing over these facilities directly, nothing has been accomplished on my end. I have always been passionate about pushing more awareness to this population.. This population is a very fragile population. Many deal with issues such as dignity issues, immobilization, and self-care deficits. This facility is a skilled nursing facility where patients have access to transportation to and from outside doctors appointments, in-house physical therapy, and “recreation” time which we will break down further. These patients also have access to a dining room for socialization and a common room. While there is a nurse in the building 24/7, if you move over to the assisted living facility next door you can find at night time there are no nursing assistants. As research recalls, RN’s only visit these patients for 12 hour a day (Long Term Care Community Coalition, 2023). This creates an unsafe environment for these patients in assisted living as if one of them falls, they have to wait for EMS to arrive. The normal day in and day out for these residents is to wake up at 6AM to a medication pass, go to therapy if they are not overflowing patients from long term care, go back into their rooms, watch TV and find ways to entertain themselves until food is brought to them, and then sleep.
