The “Era of Good Feeling” was a term created from a boston newspaper to describe the feelings that the Union had faced during a time of increased nationalism and only one political party. At the end of the War of 1812 Americans were feeling a sense of pride. That’s what sent the wheels into motion and the “Era of Good Feeling” started in 1815, but would last for only a decade. James Monroe won the election of 1816 and was sworn into presidency in 1817. During this election the Federalist party had come to an end and there was only the Democratic-Republican party left standing. This had lead to the Panic of 1819, the first major economic crisis in the United States. There were bank closures, many people were unemployed, and agriculture and industry were in a slump. Slavery was another issue that increased tension within the Union. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was then lead by Henry Clay; there were two parts. This added Missouri into the Union as a slave state. Maine was then added as a free state to keep the balance between slave states and free states. Slavery was also excluded from the Louisiana territory above the 36/30 latitude, except for Missouri which was above the line. Monroe had signed the compromise to try and avoid war which was bound to happen with all the tension that has been building up. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 had temporarily put off war and had increased sectionalism. In 1823, president James Monroe had relayed a message to congress and european countries. It was called the Monroe Doctrine and was written by John Quincy Adams. The Monroe Doctrine told European countries to stay out of the Western Hemisphere and in return the United States would stay out of European affairs.
