How useful is source 8 for understanding how people spent their leisure time in the mid-seventeenth century?
When learning and trying to understand about something, it helps to have images. An example of this is Source 8. Where as usual sources contain text, this source contains pictures which enhances the readers knowledge because a lot more can be said in a picture; than in a paragraph of text.
Source 8 is very useful to help you understand what, where, when, and who the Puritans were. This is also well illustrated by the pictures surrounding the text where it is easy to tell what the Puritans believed and how they felt towards Leisure Activities.
From this, I have learnt that the Puritans were the most powerful people in England around 1639 and their attitude towards Leisure activities wasn’t good. Consequently, they banned all leisure activities with the help of Oliver Cromwell: Ruler at the time, and also coincidentally, a Puritan also. They then decided on work, to be the most focused activity throughout the week except from on a Sunday. Because on a Sunday they would not work, they would pray, visit the Church (as they would all believe in God), look after the sick, and feed the poor. A good example of this can be found in the detailed pictures surrounding the text. They include what to do on a Sunday on the left, and more over, what not to do, on the right.
