Fear is the main cause of altering public space. People alter public space all of the time in our daily lives. It happens whether you know that it does or not. Most of the time it happens when you are not paying attention to it. The times that you do pay attention to it though can really have a lasting effect on you. Public space is a place that is open to the public. I altered public space on multiple occasions, when I was sick, when a car thought I followed them, and even when I was walking my dogs down the street.

There was a woman who looked like she was in her fifties or sixties. She was walking a couple of feet in front of me and she kept looking back to make sure I was not getting too close to her. I was gaining on her a little bit and she noticed that so she started jogging faster and then she ended up moving to the other side of the road. So, I decided to go ahead and pass her because I noticed that she seemed a little frightened. When I was passing her, she kept an eye on me to make sure I wasn’t getting too close to her. After I had passed her, she slowed down a lot and kept looking at me until I turned the corner. It was kind of scary for me also, nobody had ever done that to me that I know of. It made me think about the way that I poise myself. In conclusion, altering public space happens almost everyday, whether you know that you caused somebody to do something else other than they had planned either out of fear of you or people wanting to be around you. In most cases it is fear that causes someone to move to the other side of the hallway because you are sick, pull off the road because they think you are following them or even start running faster because they think that you are too close to them. Every time it happens, it has a lasting effect on whoever it happens
