One similarity of the activity and disengagement theory is that they both explain a loss of function and explain how they are gradual in life in terms of socially and biologically. They are similar in this because in the activity theory socially it can stop or encourage people going out which then in fact damages or improves their biology. However, in the disengagement theory socially it encourages people to withdraw and therefore negatively impacts their biology. An example of this is that as you get older it has been scientifically proven that you will start to age regardless of what you do and both theories recognise this, however, they suggest how you can slow these processes and how to come to terms with it in different ways. This could affect someone in a care home as they may already feel as if their life is over being put into a care home as it is a very difficult adjustment to come to terms with, the disengagement theory pushes them further away from the things that keep them going and can be very damaging for someone in this position.
