"There is often a discussion about how much power the government should have over what we do, say, and see. Some believe that there should be no restriction to these things while others believe in heavy censorship. In the generations before me people worried about the freedom of speech, and making sure that there was no government infringement on their First Amendment Rights, and though my generation is still concerned with these matters, there is a new conversation arising. Many people are now discussing how much power the government should be allowed to have over what we can and can not do on the internet. I believe that our First Amendment rights go hand in hand with our right to access what we see, say, and do on the internet. I believe that people think it is easier to deny someone access to the internet for saying something that could be deemed offensive or hurtful, but you would not be able to silence these people in real life. However, I view this as a societal issue and not an internet issue. If someone says something hurtful to you in real life, there is no way to block them or get their account deleted. A person will be hateful whether they are being hateful on the internet or in real life, and there is really no way to combat that. It becomes much easier to strip someone of their rights when they are just a profile picture and a short description of their personality, but it still does not make it right. Whether we like what the person is saying or not, they still have a government given right to express how they feel, the same way you and I do. I feel that social media platforms like twitter and instagram have forgotten this most important right; people are getting their accounts deleted for having political views that oppose the majority, or expressing an unpopular opinion, and this is simply
