Parents and other people of power may think “that school starting later may cause students to watch more t.v. and use the internet a lot more”. I do see where that may be a reasonable fear but in all reality students would be at home the same amount of time if school started later compared to school starting at its regular time. Timeframes would be the only difference. Students would have more time to sleep, study, and get their work done assuring better grades. Another concern parents and school officials may have is that students may become lazy and begin to sleep too much. Students will still have to have time to do their work and study, but they would just be getting a couple extra hours of sleep at night. “Even a start time of 8:35 a.m. allows 57 to 60 percent of students to get eight or more hours of sleep, which is an important health benefit for a majority of students,” Kyla Wahlstrom. They could decide to do their work when they get home and have time to rest that night and the next morning or save their work for the morning either way they would only get a few extra hours of sleep.
