Cole has always been an angry person. He bragged to the school about breaking into a hardware store. Peter Driscal ratted him out, Cold found out that he did it, and Cole beat him to the point where Peter can't speak properly. Once the storm passes, he tries to get up and find the baby birds. When he finds them, they're all dead, but they were so close to their nest. The birds felt that they had a home to go to, and Cole wishes he had one that felt like home. He has a home but he doesn't feel like it's home because of his abusive and uncaring parents. He felt jealous of the birds. He begins to learn his lesson and starts to understand the meaning of life and changes for the better.
Cole is becoming responsible for his actions. He never admitted to his actions. He always blamed them on someone else. After petting the Spirit Bear, he sees that the bear didn't want to attack him but it was forced to because Cole attacked it. When Cole is rescued from the island, he wants to prove that the bear attacked him but he kept it private. He respected the bear and threw away the fur in his pocket. He wants to speak the truth and only the truth, even if he was sent to jail. From there on, he would become a better
