I was not surprised by the interrogation of Brendan Dassey since the readings taught me about the mishaps that occur during the interrogation room, especially with the youth. Norris and Redlich (2012) argue that juveniles with cognitive disabilities and developmental disabilities does not the ability to fully understand their rights and easily susceptible to pressure. I researched Brendan’s background and found that he was only 16 years old when he was interrogated by the police. Brendan also suffered from learning disabilities and a below-average IQ. He can have been easily manipulated into giving false confessions. I strongly do not believe that this an isolated incident. Juveniles, people with mental illness and developmental disabilities are at high risk for giving a false confession that can incriminate them. The interrogators multiple times try to express sympathy and how they understand why Brendan kept quiet about the crime. As we learned, memory can be faulty so when the interrogator makes suggestions force an individual to remember an incident, they are more easily to make up a memory. Brendan started to fill in the missing gaps to satisfied the interrogators. The interrogator persisted that Brendan knew more than he was telling them. Brendan was not aware that his compliance leads him to self-incrimination. He was pressured to believe that he was at the crime scene and that his uncle told the interrogator the truth. Although, the interrogators claim that they will allow Brendan to retell his story “truthfully”, they kept interrupting and began to make suggestions about his participation in the crime. They were the ones that led Brendan’s story by pressuring him to remember small details at the day. Due to this reasons, the interrogator clearly violates Brendan’s constitutional
