The moral conflict that occurs when a family member is left for unjust treatment, is hard to reach a conclusion of a correct or incorrect way to deal with that situation. In the play Antigone by Sophocles, Creon declares a law that Antigone’s brother, Polyneices, is to have no burial rights. Antigone is influenced by the idea of justice by the determination of burying her brother, condemnation to Creon, and not denying her actions when confronted. Antigone’s determination to bury her brother displays her mind acting through justice. When Antigone returned to her brother’s body, she, “found the bare corpse, and all her love’s work wasted. She wept, and cried on heaven to damn the hands that had done this thing” (Sophocles 207). As Antigone invites Ismene to bury Polyneices, she strongly speaks, “He is my brother. And he is your brother, too… Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way” (Sophocles 191). Antigone’s genuine opposing character shows justice within her as she is going against Creon because Polyneices is her brother. When Ismene brings up the point that Creon has strictly declared that not to happen, Antigone turns that statement down by saying he is not strong enough to get in her way. Antigone shows character and justice just as one may believe to “Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation, for your character is what you are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are” (Carnegie). This applies to Antigone’s ideas as she is more concerned with how her character is rather than what her reputation is. Her strong desire to bury Polyneices significantly demonstrates her character.
