English 10R Mrs. Conetta To Kill A Mockingbird: Justice Essay When a crime occurs people want justice for the victim and want the criminal to be punished for what he/she has done. Justice is the process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, justice was not served to Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, and Boo Radley.

Proving that the marks on Mayella could not have come from Tom’s left arm, after Mayella allegedly said he beat and raped her with his left hand because the marks on her face were on her right side. Atticus’s proof to the court should have proved Tom was innocent but since Tom was African American, his fate was already decided for him. No matter how much evidence Atticus had, the jury would still decide Tom was guilty of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. “ Tom’s powerful shoulders rippled under his thin shirt. He rose to his feet and stood with his right hand on the back of his chair. He looked oddly off balance, but it was not from the way he was standing. His left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side. It ended in a small shriveled hand, and from as far away as the balcony I could see that it was no use to him.” (page 248). This quote shows the injustice of Tom’s trial and the proof that Atticus had to prove Tom was innocent and he did not rape and beat Mayella. One example is, Mayella is emotionally, physically, and mentally abused at home by her father. Mayella is oldest out of all her siblings and the only one who received a decent education. She is basically raising her siblings because her father is always drinking and spending their welfare money on alcohol instead of providing for his family, so Mayella has to take the role of being a parent to her siblings. “She says she never kissed a grown man before an’ she might as well kiss ,a nigger. She says what her papa do to her don’t count” (page 260). This quote shows that Mayella told Tom that she is sexually abused by her father at home. Also, Mayella admitted this at Tom’s trial in front of the jury, basically inferring that her father sexually abuses her. Another example is, Mayella has to take care of all her siblings because her father is always drunk and doesn’t care about providing for his family.
