Morality: How can we tell if we are “doing the right thing”?
Morality can be defined in many unique ways, and most people do not believe in the same “definition” of morality. Morals help people when facing certain decisions to decide what is right and wrong. Everyone has a different view of what is right based on their past choices, education, and upbringing. In cases of emergency difficult decisions sometimes have to be made in a matter of seconds. Sometimes these decisions are made based off of instinctive urges and natural reflexes. In these situations, how can someone tell if they are “doing the right thing”? Philosophers based their own theories based on what they believe is right and “morally correct”. The theories and principles made by Mill, Kant, and Aristotle explain their unique views on what is right and wrong. I will analyze similarities and differences between theories to explain what I believe is the right thing to do.

The basic belief of classical utilitarianism is “action is right if it produces the greatest overall balance of happiness over unhappiness”(Rachels 110). Utilitarianism is based off three beliefs that morality of an actions depends on the result of an action, the actions consequences matter only if they involve the happiness of individuals, and individuals happiness is considered equally. An decision is right if it produces the most good. If the consequences of an action do not produce happiness than the action is not right. Philosopher John Stuart Mills developed the Principle of Utility. The Principle of Utility explains that “happiness is desirable, and the only thing desirable” (Rachels 98).
