Firstly, Friar Lawrence was the only one in the story that tried to help Romeo and Juliet, and never turned his back. He stood by them for the whole play, unlike characters like the Nurse, and Lady Capulet. The nurse, for example played the role of Juliet’s motherly figure in the story, but in the end, she betrayed Juliet by telling her to go through with bigamy. The relationship was just not built to last owing to the fact that the Capulets and the Montagues can’t be together. They can’t even be seen together as one knows from Juliet! “If they do see thee they will murder thee.” (Act 2, Scene 2, Line 70). Also, one of them was bound to kill themselves over jealousy in the relationship since they both have suicidal tendencies! The secrecy was driving them mad, they looked for an escape from it all, and both ended up killing themselves. Fate just didn’t want this relationship to work out.
In closing, there are several people other than Friar Lawrence to be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence was the only one who cared about the couple, and stood by them throughout the whole play. The blame should be favoured towards Lord Capulet, Tybalt, Prince Escalus, and of course, the unavoidable family feud.
