Freedom of speech, or freedom of expression in any form, is always important. A society should not have people unable to do or say anything, even if most people do not agree with them. In some cases, people should not say anything to someone if it is offensive to them. Some examples of that are racist, sexist, or any type of derogatory language that belittles someone, but everyone should be able to say anything they want to say. In the book, Fahrenheit 451, the people in their society have no freedom. They remove debates or topics that cause a lot of different opinions by threatening people with various kinds of punishments that prevent people from speaking out against them. In our society, there are a lot of different debates that happen every day. People debate over who they would prefer to have as president. Siblings all over the world debate over who can get the last slice of pizza. In school, there is even a debate club. No matter what you do, people are going to disagree about something. But since people disagree, that does not mean you should take away their right to speak out about something that is on their mind. Freedom of speech is the right to express oneself with words or actions. In our society, the First Amendment protects this right by not allowing Congress to make any laws that would not allow people to express themselves freely. The common reading of the First Amendment is that commitment to free speech is not the acceptance of only non-controversial expressions that enjoy general approval. Accepting a commitment to the First Amendment means freedom from what we hate. Basically, people cannot take away your freedom to express your feelings in any way that you choose to express them.
