Comparing The Giver to Farenheit 451 “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” (Lowry). In other words, limiting or barring the ability to share memories or experiences from the past and to share them with others is a way of limiting people’s freedoms and a form of oppression. This is an example of how, despite the fact that The Giver and Fahrenheit 451 are two very different and isolated fictional portrayals of dystopia, there are many frightening similarities between the two. Conversely, in Fahrenheit 451 family dynamics are much closer to how they are in most of our modern society, with no limits on how many children or relatives you can have, as well as finding a partner on your own instead of being assigned one. This also connects back to how especially controlling and oppressive governments like the one in The Giver function purely off of limiting your choices in life to not allow you to think that much for yourself and therefore never think twice about what you are told to do, whether that be performing your job or releasing a newborn. On the other hand, governments such as the one in Fahrenheit 451 operate by pushing their own propaganda into people through short term media in a successful effort to control their people, which is why they limit actually true or essential information from the public by banning books. Another key difference between the two books is in how the societies themselves function. Despite both The Giver and Fahrenheit 451 being extremely dystopian, their societies behave and have quite a lot of differing
