Since graduating from nursing school, I have had the opportunity to care for adult and pediatric patients in an acute care setting, and most recently to work with both populations in a clinic setting. I have encountered patients and families from all walks of life and have tackled many of the challenges of nursing present in the 21st century. From comforting the parents of a 23-year-old college student diagnosed with a glioblastoma, to sitting with a 5-year-old patient and his family as he seized throughout the night, or caring for an elderly woman during her last hours of life, I have been exposed to a wide range of cases during my career. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I plan to care for patients of all ages with many different diagnoses, and my diverse background will be a major benefit. My ultimate goal is to continue in primary care upon completion of graduate school. Community outreach and involvement is very important to me and will be major components of my practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner. We have been hearing whispers of a primary care physician shortage for quite some time, and Nurse Practitioners are being called upon to fill these looming gaps in healthcare. As Nurse Practitioners continue to be afforded more opportunities and recognition, I hope to be involved in running a public health clinic as a long-term goal. I love the work that I am doing in my current position. To be able to continue with a broader scope and more opportunities would be a dream come true.
