Decisions made when someone is in a fetal abnormality situation can cause great controversy. One option would be to follow through with the pregnancy and suffer from possible consequences. Another option would be to have an abortion. In this case study, Jessica and Marco have been living at their Aunt Maria’s house and have finally earned enough money to get their own apartment. A few months before the big move, Jessica finds out that she is pregnant. Their doctor, Dr. Wilson, tells them that the fetus has a condition where it will not likely develop any arms. In addition, the fetus may also have Down syndrome. Each individual in this situation has a different theory and recommendation on what to do with the fetus (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, …show more content…
She goes to Jessica’s room and continues to pray and also calls a priest (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, 2015). From this information, it is obvious that Maria is very religious. Her theory is that Jessica has a responsibility as a mother to care for her child. A mother cannot just have an abortion if the fetus is not “perfect”. A mother loves her child in all circumstances. This means that Maria’s recommendation for action is for Jessica to follow through with the pregnancy. God has a plan for the fetus and family and this is what he intends.
Dr. Wilson On the other hand, Dr. Wilson has other opinions. His theory is that human beings should live a good, high quality of life. He believes that this fetus will have a low quality of life because it will not have any arms and will have Down syndrome (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, 2015). Therefore, Dr. Wilson’s recommendation for action is to have an abortion. He states that abortion is the best option scientifically and medically (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, 2015). Having an abortion will eliminate the trial and hardship that the fetus would go through in life.

He will support Jessica in whatever decision she makes, but believes that the pregnancy, and having a disabled child, will be a burden and hurt their economic security and life plans (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, 2015). His most prominent theory is similar to Dr. Wilson’s. He most likely believes that humans should only live a successful, high quality of life. The low quality of the fetus’s life will hurt the family financially and Marco does not want that to happen. For this reason, his recommendation for action is to have an abortion. This is the only wat to protect the economic security and plans for him and his wife (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, 2015).
Jessica
Jessica also has mixed feelings because she has been hoping to better their socioeconomic status and increase their independence but also feels like she should follow through with the pregnancy. Overall, her theory is closest to Maria’s and states that life is sacred (“Case Study: Fetal Abnormality”, 2015). This means that she believes that life is special and granted from God. Her recommendation for action is to follow through with the pregnancy and have faith in God. She knows it won’t be easy but she cannot imagine living her life if she had an abortion.
