On November 27, 1095 in Clermont, France Pope Urban II issued a call for a crusade ading the Byzantine Empire and set free Jerusalem from Muslim control. The official start of the Crusade was August 15, 1096. Those who left before that date were considered part of the People’s Crusade, which was the beginning phase of the First Crusade with the goal of taking back the Holy Land, and Jerusalem.
