First Mission Trip

On my first mission trip in June of 2014 I experienced many firsts. I camped in a tent for the first time. I took my first solar shower. I mixed concrete for the first time, and for the first time in my life, I saw what true poverty is. I helped build houses in Arizona on the San Carlos Indian Reservation, alongside the other volunteers from my church. The abject poverty inspired my passion to help others, which I will fulfill in the University of Arizona’s nursing program. After a week of exhausting work on the Reservation, 12 other people and I piled into a crowded and humid van. Even though everybody was physically and emotionally drained from the long week of work, we began to reflect on our contributions to the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Everybody shared their favorite and least favorite parts of the trip, which we called “highs and lows.” After sharing, silence seemed to settle over the van as we reminisced about our experiences. We were only 10 minutes out from our campsite, and everybody was itching to get out of the van. We stopped to visit a house that we would be working on, and as soon as we clambered out of the van to meet the family we would be building the house for, their infant daughter started choking. Both of the parents panicked, so two women from my church ran to help the baby. One grabbed her and pounded on her back to dislodge what she was choking on. The other woman swept the baby’s mouth with her finger to remove the object, but nothing was there. The five-month-old baby was choking on her own phlegm. Later we learned that she was constantly ill due to the terrible living conditions and lack of medical care on the Reservation. I saw a life saved that day, and it was
