The general public have a perception the role of a first responder is to run inside the danger zones and rescue people. The attacks on the World Trade Centers provided a glimpse of first responders actions which shadow the perception the public have. Many first responders ran into danger in an attempt to save as many lives before the towers fell. With little to no understanding of the exact dangers inside, emergency personnel and civilians alike charged into the buildings with many not returning. The greatest risk first responders face is placing the safety of others above their own. Training may be overridden with the internal desire to help others. Many times a decision needs to be made immediately and there is no time to put oneself over the life of another.
