The Bill of Rights is the name given for the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution. The Bill of Rights written by James Madison, was ratified into the constitution in 1791. Ratifying it was not easy, a huge debate occurred between two different factions, The Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. However, the document’s purpose was to set out the liberties of the people that the government could not control. It protects the US citizens from any governmental abuse, by setting restrictions on the three branches of government.

The first amendment is the most important since it guarantees the basic rights that allow people to control the government. As James Madison said in the Federalist Paper 51 “A dependence on the people is, no doubt the primary control on the government”. This shows that the rights stated in the 1st amendment insure that people are the primary control. The first amendment to the constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” This means that all people are free to practice any religion they …show more content…
The main goal of this amendment is to provide a safe and secure life for all people.
