In May of 2009, documentarian Ana Sofia Joanes created a piece of work known as “Fresh.” This piece went in depth about the different methods of modern day farming, the goals of each, and the positives/negatives of each. Throughout the entire piece, however, you can see quite plainly that she is arguing to prove that local, sustainable farming is far better and superior as compared to the more common mass production farming. Her arguments are based almost purely on Pathos, her Ethos is almost never presented, and her Logos feels very restricted, and limited. The documentary mainly follows the man Joel Salatin, a sustainable farmer located in Shenandoah Valley. As you watch, he goes through his weekly process of farming, and shows the different ways that he is required to treat his animals. He starts off with showing his chickens, of whom he speaks to with a kind voice, and gives large tracts of land to roam. The documentary then shows the mass production farms in contrast. These farms give the chicks very little room to themselves, gives very little compassion, and almost no words are spared on them. In a documentary by Michael Moore, you can know what his opinion is almost immediately, as they will state it off of the bat. He himself will speak, and present his own argument. However, the director Ana S. Joane chooses a silent narrative. She has others speak for her, and her own opinion comes through them. Due to this, you never directly see her own background and experience in the farming industry. When trying to find her outside of the movie so that you can get a better idea of who she is, it is almost impossible to find any information on her, and any found doesn’t speak very much towards
