The liver creates bile, which helps the body to digest fat, and then is stored in the gallbladder. Gallstones are formed through tiny, stone-like structures, from cholesterol or other substance build-up. Normally, the body creates these gallstones in order to regulate the gallbladder. Gallbladder Disease occurs when the patient’s gallbladder has inflammation or irritation along the gallbladder’s wall, also known as cholecystitis. Inflammation occurs when gallstones are blocking the ducts that are connected to the small intestine. However, this can create an issue because the bile begins to build up with nowhere to be released. This is just the starting point of the disease and it can progress into a more severe case if it is left untreated. The gallstones can sometimes become stuck through the stem of the gallbladder that forms a plug for the bile to travel further into the intestines. Gallbladder Disease can vary among many nations and regions of the world. Hispanics and Europeans have a high risk for gallstones, as well as North and South Americans. Most of these cases are generated through factors of dietary intake and genetics. If the patient’s family history shows evidence of painful gallstones, then that increases their risk of having it as well. This occurs through the mutation of a gene within the family’s genetics.
