Studying general education at St. Louis Community College has opened my eyes and prepared me for the rest of my educational career and beyond. Up until taking Capstone, I had not realized the importance that studying general education held. After taking the time to look back at all of the new skills I have acquired, I now feel prepared for what lies ahead. I feel a new sense of confidence, and I feel more educated. I have been preparing to study general education since I was born. My parents always had me in daycare where I would engage in tasks that would prepare me for preschool. They seemed like a repeat of high school because I was being required to take classes that had nothing to do with my major. I had always heard that studying general education was a waste of two years and that the classes would be easy to knock out. I did not think that I could possibly learn any new skills because I believed that I had already been equipped with the skills I would need for college through high school, but by taking general education courses, I realized I was wrong. I have improved on the skill of valuing the most throughout my studies. After working on this skill, I have a different outlook when I see people’s opinions on social media. It disappoints me when I see ignorance regarding other people’s values or cultures. Besides being able to use the skill of valuing within a course, I use it on a daily basis. Studying general education and acquiring this skill has changed me as a person, and has caused me to not be so quick to judge.
Another skill that I have been working on since elementary school is higher order thinking. Through general education courses, I have had to use this skill in almost every class I have encountered. While I had gained the general idea of this skill, studying general education courses caused me to adapt in order to have a completed end result. In addition, as my educational and occupational careers continue, I will be able to go beyond what the minimum standards are. I will be able to use information and criteria to produce a result that helps me stand apart from
