Abstract: What is Generational Trauma and How it Affects Native American Families?

Generational trauma is the events passed down within a family, whether its repeated behaviors or actions. This trauma can be within behaviors, relationship consequences, environmental influences, and cultural associations (Colls 2022). Within Native Americans, generational trauma is a recurring event in families and communities across the United States and Canada. The Native Youth Initiative for Leadership, Empowerment, and Development (I-LEAD) funded projects that took a strengths-based approach that emphasized culture, native youth resiliency, youth capacity building, inter-generational engagement, and the empowerment and self-development of native youth (Heather Sauyaq, J. Since colonization is a huge historical event in the United States, resolutions have been created to reduce the decreasing Native American population because of the psychological effects, much like suicide, high drug and alcohol usage, poverty, abuse, and violent living conditions.
